PRPC approves rural planning group

Members will only have power to advise on regional issues

By Kevin Welch

Publication Date: 04/23/10
There will be a new way to tell transportation planners what the Panhandle needs.
Board members with the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission voted Thursday to form a rural planning organization to provide elected officials an opportunity to have input into regional funding and planning. The organization will cover the 17-county area served by the Amarillo Texas Department of Transportation District. "

Dear B Charles,

I wanted to let you know about an upcoming grassroots effort we have coming up in May and ask you a favor.

As you may know, Adventure Cycling Association is working in partnership with dozens of states and federal agencies, nonprofits, volunteers and the U.S. Congress to create an official U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS), connecting America’s urban, suburban and rural areas.

Because you are such a good friend of Adventure Cycling and a Life Member, I'd like to ask for your support in helping spread the word about this effort. I don't know if you are comfortable with on-line grassroots fundraising, but I'm wondering if you would be willing to give it a try. We are only asking select people to be one of our Core Supporters in this program.

I’m not asking you personally for a donation, but rather, asking you to network with your cycling friends in order to raise $10 each from approximately 25 people during the month of May. You can actually choose your own goal amount but we have used $250 as an example.

Our ultimate goal is to raise $20,000 in this short time period. We've never tried something like this before but felt like the USBRS was the perfect project because it benefits all cyclists and even people who are not members of Adventure Cycling can get excited about supporting a national cycling network.

We’re using secure, internet-based systems for the donations. On the site, you will be able to keep track of your progress and see how your effort stacks up with other like-minded cycling supporters.

We’ll also be offering some fun rewards including a Klean Kanteen stainless steel bottle for reaching your fundraising goal and several other prizes for those who exceed their goals.

I hope I can count you in to join me in this exciting campaign that will help further our efforts to coordinate what is likely to be the world’s largest bicycle route network.

The first step is to complete a questionnaire and let us know whether you will be joining our effort.  http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22A9MWHPHUY
You’ll need to know your member number to complete the survey, which is L001296.

If you agree to join us, we’ll send you more information in a week or so on how to get started, with lots of tips on how to succeed. The effort launches in May 3, which is the start of National Bike Month.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Thanks for your consideration.

Heads Up! for the RIDE OF SILENCE

Cycling AdvocacyMotorists get distracted by cell phones, iPods, traveling companions, a song on the radio, or just getting sleepy.  Cyclists get distracted by potholes, broken glass, painted lines, the scenery, unsecured animals, rude motorists, and … each other.  Both use bright colors, loud noises,  and blinking lights to attract attention.

Cars are bigger and stronger and faster, therefore it takes a lot of courage for bicyclists to share the road.  The courtesy of a safe personal distance is appreciated by both.

Cyclists travel solely, or "ribbon" down rural roads, Amarillo streets, or off-road trails. Yes, they have a right to use the roadways as well as the obligation to abide by the laws that govern them.

Both motorists and cyclists are your neighbors, friends and family.  So, HEADS UP!  Watch for us, we’ll be watching for you.

Please join us.

RIDE OF SILENCE
WEDNESDAY, MAY 20th at 6:30 p.m.
SW 22nd AVE & VAN BUREN ST.

It is also to Raise Awareness, and Promote “Share The Road”.

I know all of you spend a lot of time on the internet searching for cool bike parts and fun rides.  Well now this can benefit Old Tascosa Cycling and it cost you nothing.

GoodSearch.com is a new Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. Use it just as you would any search engine, get quality search results from Yahoo, and watch the donations add up!

GoodShop.com is a new online shopping mall which donates up to 37 percent of each purchase to your favorite cause! Hundreds of great stores including Amazon, Target, Gap, Best Buy, ebay, Macy's and Barnes & Noble have teamed up with GoodShop and every time you place an order, you’ll be supporting your favorite cause.

Just go to www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter Old Tascosa Cycling as the charity you want to support. And, be sure to spread the word!

I have just registed Old Tascosa Cycling with Good Search and it will take a few days to process.   Please consider using this search engine when possible.  It will benefit our club.
